ROTARY WORKS TO STOP HUNGER By Sharon Harris

If you believe that with over 6.6 billion people in the world there just isn’t enough food to go around so it’s impossible to stop world hunger, Rotarians will tell you that you are wrong. Citrus County Rotarians are teaming with Rotarians around the world to help end the scourge of hunger. Read more »

Stop Hunger Now

As you all are aware, our Club is taking the lead on a great joint Citrus Rotary/Interact and community International Service Project.  On Saturday, February 27, 2010, beginning at 9:30am, we will have the opportunity to come together at Crystal River High School to package over 40,000 meals to feed the worlds most impoverished people.  The Stop Hunger Now program provides packaged meals to the most impoverished nations, including Haiti.

We will need approximately 150 volunteers to pull off this project.  We currently have about 35 (members, spouses, etc..) from within our Club who signed up at our last meeting.  This project is as important as the Christmas Shopping project, and from what our leadership describes (they did it at the District Conference), you will feel great about being a part of this project.  Email me if you will volunteer, and if you have family, friends, employees, etc… also willing to help, send me their names as well.  We are getting volunteers from all the Citrus County Clubs, including both Citrus H.S. and Crystal River H.S. Interact clubs.  Other clubs in our district are also participating with donations and volunteers.  This will be a great event and you will not want to miss it.

We of course could always use more donations.  We have currently budgeted to package 40,000 meals.  For every $25 we can add, we can feed another 100 people.  Funds can be pledged to our own foundation and are tax deductible.  The committee met and has decided to solicit “1000 Meal Sponsors”-  For $250 donation, you or your company can be recognized as a “1000 Meal Sponsor”.  Any donation will be accepted, so if you are able to donate, let me know.

By the way, the event should end at 12:30 on that Saturday.  This is Rotary in action.  Be a part of it.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Keith Taylor

Christmas Shop

Rotary Christmas ShopThis is the Rotary Club’s annual Children’s Christmas Shopping Project.

The Rotary Club of Crystal River, Rotary Club of Inverness, Central Citrus Rotary, Rotray Club of Homosassa, Sugarmill Woods Rotary and King’s Bay Rotary join to meet the needs of the community by targeting underprivileged and financially needy children in order to provide them, and their families, with gifts for Christmas.

The children will meet the above criteria and be between the ages of seven and thirteen.  The candidates will be selected through recommendations from our community school’s Guidance Departments and through The Family Resource Center.

The event will take place at K-Mart in the Crystal River Mall on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at approximately 7:00 A.M.  Each child will be paired with a Rotarian Chaperone and provided with a $100.00 budget with which to purchase gifts.  A light breakfast, to include juice and milk, will be planned.  Each chaperone is then responsible for watching over their child, assisting with shopping list, budgeting, and checking out.  Rotary expects the children to spend all of their $100.00.  Rotary will retain the receipts.

After shopping the children will be transported to the Plantation Inn where the volunteers will assist the children with the wrapping and tagging of purchases.  During this time the children are treated to pizza, cookies, drinks, and music.  The Children’s Christmas Shopping will end by approximately 11:30 A.M.

Rotarians will implement all phases including grant application, coordination of volunteers, contacting of schools, coordination of children through guidance departments, contacting care givers, mailing of notices, securing permission signatures, transportation arrangements, gathering and tracking supplies (wrapping paper, etc.) and financial contributions and pledges, coordination for K-Mart staff, Plantation staff, set-up, registration, clean up, publicity, final reporting, and so on.

This is a major hands-on project with guaranteed potential to make a difference and improve the lives of some deserving Citrus County Children.  Our opportunity to mentor and model for these children as we guide them through the morning is another bond between Rotary and our Community.

All contributions of any amount are needed.
